Review Highlights

Eva's European Sweets is a family-run Polish restaurant on Milton Avenue in Syracuse, New York, opened in 1997 by Eva Zaczynski after immigrating from Poznań, Poland in 1988. Guy Fieri stopped by for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives to experience the traditional recipes Eva brought from the Polish farm she grew up on — with her daughter Kolina and son David helping run the place, it's a true family operation. Walking through the door, Guy said, felt like stepping into a piece of Europe: Polish pottery and glasswork on the walls, the aroma of slow-cooked stews, and Eva herself in the kitchen making everything from scratch.

  • ·Potato pancakes (placki) with Hungarian goulash sauce — handmade from grated potatoes, onion, egg, and flour, fried until golden and crisp on the outside with a tender interior; topped with a slow-simmered Hungarian-style sauce of ground beef, peppers, garlic, paprika, cayenne, and tomato, finished with sour cream. Guy called it “really nice comfort food” and praised the contrast: “so crisp outside, tender on the inside, and this gravy got a little bit of spice to it”
  • ·“Tour of Poland” platter — a generous sampler of the restaurant’s greatest hits: pierogi, golabki (stuffed cabbage rolls), kielbasa with sautéed onions, bigos (hunters’ stew), sauerkraut, and horseradish mustard; the most-ordered item on the menu and the ideal introduction to Eva’s cooking
  • ·Golabki (stuffed cabbage rolls) — described by regulars as “the size of small footballs,” filled with seasoned meat and rice, slow-cooked in tomato sauce until tender
  • ·Drunken meatballs — served over mashed potatoes with a rich, boozy sauce; a consistent fan favorite that turns up in review after review
  • ·Homemade desserts — sweet cheese crepes, carrot cake, and an ever-changing pastry selection that lives up to the “European Sweets” name; Eva’s desserts are routinely called “5 star” and “heavenly” by regulars

Guy’s take was simple and emphatic: “It’s the real deal.” The potato pancakes — crisp, tender, and topped with a deeply savory Hungarian sauce — embodied what makes Eva’s special: old-world recipes executed with care by a family that treats customers like guests in their home. “This is Easter, this is Christmas, this is everything rolled up into one,” Guy said of the food, and a regular told him they’d “probably move from Syracuse if it weren’t for this” — about the highest compliment a neighborhood restaurant can earn.

About

A family-run Polish restaurant on Milton Avenue in Syracuse, opened in 1997 by Eva Zaczynski, who immigrated from Poznań, Poland in 1988 and brought her grandmother’s recipes with her. Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, it’s widely considered the best Polish food in Central New York — a small, personality-filled dining room decorated with Polish pottery and glasswork, where everything from pierogi to pastries is made from scratch.

What visitors say

Regulars describe the experience as feeling like you’re sitting in a Polish grandmother’s kitchen while she cooks for you — the food is homemade from scratch, the portions are generous, and Eva herself is often on the premises making sure everything runs right. The indoor dining room is cozy to the point of tight, and parking can be a challenge, but an outdoor courtyard with string lights and a fire pit provides a relaxed alternative in warmer months. The “Tour of Poland” platter is the move for first-timers, the desserts more than earn the “European Sweets” name, and the selection of Eastern European beers and Chopin potato vodka rounds out the experience.
